ROCHESTER — The Kenyon-Wanamingo wrestling team finished Saturday’s Section 1A individual tournament with six state entrants for the Class A state tournament.
The Knights finished with five section champions and had another true second victory.
“I really couldn’t be happier with how things went,” coach Matt Ryan said. “I can’t remember having a better championship round than that.”
The Knights collected section titles from Mitchel Lexvold (112), Chad Lexvold (125), Drew Lexvold (130), Derek Melhouse (152) and Jarid Groth (160). Of those five championship victories, Mitchel Lexvold, Drew Lexvold and Melhouse each won by fall.
Skyler Quamme (140) lost his championship match before winning a true second tilt by fall in the first period, earning him a trip to St. Paul.
For Ryan, seeing Melhouse’s victory over Dover-Eyota’s Jake Krogstad was especially gratifying. Melhouse lost by technical fall to Krogstad a month ago but came back to win by fall on Saturday.
“Derek’s was a big underdog victory,” Ryan said. “He caught him on his back and pinned him.”
For Drew Lexvold, the trip to state could be historical. If he wins, he’ll be the first two-time state champion in Kenyon-Wanamingo history. He won last year as a 125-pound entrant.
He’ll again be joined by his two brothers at state, each of whom are ranked in the top five in their respective weight classes, according to theguillotine.com.
“All three had dominating performances,” Ryan said of the Lexvolds.
