ST. PAUL — The impromptu back flip said it all: Drew Lexvold was once again a state champion.
The Kenyon-Wanamingo senior defeated Martin County West’s Alex Anderson by a 9-1 decision in Saturday’s 130-pound Class A championship, giving Lexvold his second state title in as many years.
“It’s awesome. It feels good,” said Lexvold, who took home the title last year at 125 pounds. “It’s a good wrestling accomplishment for me. Especially for our family too. Wrestling is just a huge part of it.”
Drew (45-2) wasn’t the only Lexvold wrestling for a state title on Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center. His twin brother, Chad, took second in the 125-pound match, while younger brother Mitchel also claimed silver after losing 14-2 at 112 pounds.
“It was just really fun being up here with them,” Mitchel said.
Chad, who lost by an 18-5 decision to Bronson Steuber of Jackson County Central, was elated just to be wrestling in the championship.
“I wanted the title, obviously. No doubt about it,” he said. “But to end my year in the finals with both of my brothers is pretty awesome.”
Drew took an early lead in his match against Anderson (38-2) and never looked back en route to the 9-1 victory.
“I thought he wrestled just about a perfect match,” coach Matt Ryan said.
After the clock ran out, Lexvold celebrated by doing a back flip on the mat before running into the stands to greet his girlfriend.
“I just kind of did it,” Lexvold said of the flip.
“That’s Drew’s personality, always having fun,” Ryan said. “The bigger the spotlight, the more fun he’s having. I think we saw that here.”
Two other K-W wrestlers had their final matches earlier in the day. Jarid Groth lost the third-place match at 160 pounds to Sean Huls of Pierz by a 3-2 decision. Skyler Quamme lost at 140 pounds to Sam Derynck of Minneota in the fifth-place match by fall in 1:30.
Still, the Knights placed five wrestlers on the podium, capped by two silver medalists and a two-time state champ.
“Just to be on the stand and win a medal up here, I’m very proud of those guys,” Ryan said. “We had a great tournament.”
